Exit Surf Men’s Canterbury Champs 2023 set to conclude South Island NZ Surf Series Season

Consecutive South Island events bring the South Islands sequence of New Zealand Surf Series to a close this weekend with the Exit Surf Men’s Canterbury Championships taking place at New Brighton Beach attracting a top field of domestic surfers.

The three-day event window spans through to Monday with good conditions forecasted throughout the weekend for top Kiwi surfers to revel in.

Current NZ Surf Series leader Taylor Hutchison (Rag) will look to round out his season with a good performance in Christchurch to hold onto his lead and take back the title that he won there in 2021.

Taylor is joined by the likes of Raglan’s Caleb Cutmore who is holding seventh overall in the NZ Surf Series and the defending Champion of the event after a standout performance in 2022.

There will be a number of local Christchurch surfers that perform well in home waters including Harrison Whiteside who makes a comeback to competition. A throng of young guys will be keen to impress including Jack Wilson (Chch), Tyler Perry (Kaik), Jake Owen and Jai Oakley.

The Exit Surf Men’s Canterbury Championships plays host to a raft of additional divisions, including junior and senior plus longboard.

The top three seeds in the Under 18 Boys Division will continue their campaigns this weekend.Off the back of his win last weekend in Kaikoura Spencer Rowson (Tara) has a good lead over Kalani Louis (Tara) who sits in second place.  Third placed Tyler Perry continues his ascent up the rankings after two solid results including a 3rd place finish last weekend and a 5th at the Te Kaika South Island Champs.

Tao Mouldey (Mount) and Alexis Owen (Dun) go in to the event as the top seeds in the Under 16 Boys Division while Jack Higgins (Dun) Sol Fritchley, Sonny Lyons (Kaik) and Zen Mouldey (Mount) resume their battle in the Under 14 Boys Division.

Senior divisions include some top surfers including Dave Lyons (Kaik) and Jarrod Hancox (Tara) in the Over 30 Men’s Division while Johnny Fenton (Chch) heads up the Over 45 Men’s Division.

Jack Tyro (chch) claimed the longboard win at the South Island Champs and will again enjoy the chance of going up against Christchurch’s Will Jamieson who finished third at the event.

The Exit Surf Men’s Canterbury Championships boasts a $7,500 prize pool across all divisions.  The event will take place from 8am – 4pm daily and is based out of the North Wai Boardriders clubrooms however this is a mobile event and will run anywhere between Gore Bay and Taylors Mistake.
