SUNSET BEACH, Oahu/Hawaii (Friday, November 21, 2014): On the heels of a monumental Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa last week, the stage is now set for the second leg of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and the final Prime-rated event on this season’s ASP Qualifying Series: the Vans World Cup of Surfing, at Sunset Beach. The holding period begins on Monday, November 24, and runs through December 6, with the contest being held on the four days with the best conditions during that window.

Surfline, official forecaster for the Vans Triple Crown, are predicting a consistent run of surf throughout the period, with solid surf expected.

Maui’s Dusty Payne, winner of the first stage at Haleiwa, will be back to business in the first round when competition gets underway. As one of the lower seeds in the Vans World Cup, he will need to work his way up through the event starting in Round 1 like he did at Haleiwa, while higher seeded surfers begin in Round 3.

Regarded as one of the most challenging waves on the planet, the huge arena and thick, mountainous swells of Sunset Beach are a true proving ground for the world’s best surfers. Finding your position in the vast lineup is a skill of its own; negotiating the wave from take-off through the west bowl is another.

Celebrating 40 years this winter, the Vans World Cup honor roll consists of surfers who have successfully matched Sunset’s power. Among them, and returning to the lineup next week, will be defending Vans World Cup champion Ezekiel Lau (HAW); Joel Parkinson (AUS); John John Florence (HAW); and Adam Melling (AUS).

The very first champion of the event, back in 1975, was Australia’s Mark Richards, who went on to win four World Titles. Richards will be back in Hawaii during the Vans World Cup to help celebrate the milestone.

The 2014 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, produced by the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), will run from November 12 through December 20. All events are free and open to the public.

Fans from all over the world can experience the exciting competition via LIVE webcast at aspworldtour.com and vanstriplecrownofsurfing.com. The event will also be televised LIVE on Oceanic Surf Channel 250 & 1250HD across the state of Hawaii.
