Raglan, New Zealand (Wednesday 9th February 2022): Surfing New Zealand and Rip Curl have cancelled the upcoming Rip Curl Raglan Pro at Manu Bay due to ongoing Covid related concerns Nationally. The event was due to be held on March 19-20, 2022.
With the Covid situation increasing in significance nationally, organizers have opted to avoid any further risk of additional exposure to competitors, families, and local residents by holding the event.
“Cancelling the Rip Curl Raglan Pro is a difficult decision to make. We view the event as a great celebration of surfing in New Zealand, but the health and safety of competitors, and our respect and consideration for the local community is always our priority” commented Rip Curl marketing manager Angus Forrest. “The Raglan Pro is about getting together and having a good time whilst showcasing New Zealand’s best out at the point, so with the current uncertainty about Covid restrictions, we don’t want to add any pressure to the local community. We’ll wait until next year to get back out on the point and have a great time”.
The Rip Curl Pro Raglan has been the focal point of domestic surfing for two decades, with Manu Bay’s perfect waves matched by incredible surfing from New Zealand’s best, with a handy pay-day for the eventual male and female winners.
The event has played host to some of the biggest domestic showdowns in New Zealand’s rich surfing history, from the country’s top established surfers, to the next generation of talent trying to take the title.
The Rip Curl Pro forms an important part of the New Zealand Surf Series, which features events around the coastline of Aotearoa.
