The North Island Junior Development Camp scored pristine Pauanui waves over the weekend. Thirty top young surfers were rewarded for their efforts on the New Zealand Grom Series in 2021 and relished the chance to work with Matt Scorringe from The Art of Surfing and his talented coaches Grace Spiers and Elin Tawharu.
The two-day camp comprised a number of drills in the water focussing on progressive surfing and key heat strategy drills. On land it was all about connecting and building relationships with one another. While most surfers know one another, it is often a competitive environment where they meet up. So to have two days of surfing and working together was an awesome change.
The waves ranged up to the 1.0m mark with morning offshores and afternoon sea breezes.
A big thanks to the New Zealand Olympic Committee for supporting our efforts with junior development. Also a big thanks to the Groube’s for the amazing facility that we got to use and bring the squad together.
