Eight of the world’s finest watermen compete in eight different surfing disciplines over nine days to find one champion.
The eight disciplines include shortboard surfing, longboard surfing, stand-up paddleboard (SUP) endurance and SUP surfing, outrigger canoe endurance, big wave surfing, prone paddleboard and underwater strength run and swim.
The invitation-only contest seeks out the best conditions on offer each day, determined by meteorologists and taking into consideration optimal weather, wind and swell conditions. The Watermen and event crew then drive or fly, either by plane or helicopter from the event hub to each location.
Athletes’ points are tallied from their placing in each discipline. Athletes also select their preferred ‘double whammy’ discipline at the start of the event and they receive double points for that result. This is a big strategic play for all athletes.
Red Bull Media House produce five 10-minute hosted shows covering the event and showcasing the athletes and event locations. The shows play out on Red Bull TV’s daily Bullet Points show, across its social pages and its popular YouTube channel. The action is also highlighted across The Ultimate Waterman website and digital channels plus picked up by adventure and sports media worldwide.
The event includes public participation days for national and international competitors and spectator engagement opportunities that run alongside the elite athlete Ultimate Waterman competition.
Established in 2015, the platform is now set for this event to become a global adventure sports sensation.
