The New Zealand surfing community is set to get a boost courtesy of a new partnership between Surfline and Surfing New Zealand.
The partnership encompasses three core initiatives that support the Aotearoa surfing community. The initiatives include the exciting development of the boardrider club ‘Next Wave’ grant program, support for Surfers Rescue 24/7 participants and major prizes for the juniors competing at the Aotearoa Maori Surfing Titles.
The Next Wave grant program offers up $5,000 spread across two grants for boardrider clubs. Clubs make submissions to Surfing New Zealand telling their story of why they deserve a grant. This may be to support key learn to surf programs, support their young club members, provide necessary equipment to deliver programs or for maintenance to clubrooms. The grant program is a way to reward the surf community for the tireless voluntary work they carry out at a local level. All submissions will be assessed by a combined panel of judges from Surfing New Zealand and Surfline.

The grant gives Surfline the opportunity to support the Boardriders Clubs who are at the core of their surfing communities, and we’re thrilled we can give back in a small way. We can’t wait to see the creative entries from clubs from all around New Zealand and to see how the winning clubs use their prize money” says Ella Risby, Director of Marketing for Surfline Oceania.
The Next Wave Boardrider Club Grant will be launched early in October with winners announced in late November.
As we head into summer and ramp up the delivery of Surfers Rescue 24/7 courses, Surfline will be alongside offering course participants discounts to their subscription services. In partnership with Surf Life Saving New Zealand, this summer, our aim is to deliver the course to over 300 participants in a bid to keep our beaches outside the flags safer from dawn ‘til dusk.
Surfline joins the Aotearoa Maori Surfing Titles in 2022 with the event being held in the Far North on Labour Weekend. Surfline will provide the male and female winners of the Under 18 Divisions with a $500 scholarship, a coaching session with The Art of Surfing, Surfline subscriptions and a profile piece on Surfline as an ambassador for the year.
This boost for junior surfers comes on the back of increased interest in the 2022 edition of the event with everyone looking to enjoy the delights of Northland over the long weekend. Northland’s own Te Kauwhata Kauwhata along with Jack McKenzie (Chch), George Roberts (Chch) and Dale Cromhout (HBay) will be keen to secure the win in the boys division. New Zealand representative Natasha Gouldsbury (Tara) will lead the way for the girls alongside young Whangarei surfer Indi-Lee Ruddell.
“Working with Surfline brings some excitement heading into the summer season. The partnership focusses on adding real benefit to the surfing community, boardrider clubs and New Zealand’s top young surfers across several initiatives” said Surfing New Zealand Chief Executive Ben Kennings.
