Surfing New Zealand’s strategic priorities focus on Performance and Participation, Health and Wellbeing and Environment (clean, sustainable coastline and ocean). This focus is underpinned by a commerciality, strong governance and tikanga Maori.
The Board’s priorities include evolving the strategic plan, strengthening the sport’s financial position, setting high-level policies and guiding & enhancing the culture of surfing in New Zealand.
Surfing New Zealand is responsible for a robust nationwide event programme, managing representative teams including our Olympic athletes, high performance pathways, education of coaches & officials and community wellbeing initiatives. At our core, we are about sharing the stoke of surfing and helping our network of affiliated clubs and accredited surf schools thrive.
The organisation is governed by a board of eight directors, made up of four elected and four appointed board members. This process seeks to engage two of the four appointed members.
IDEAL APPLICANT DESCRIPTION
We’re committed to board diversity with 50% male and 50% female board members. These two appointed positions will be filled by females.
The experience and knowledge we are seeking in our new board members include:
- Strategic planning
- Financial acumen
- Legal knowledge
- Growing revenue streams in a sporting environment
- Sponsorship, marketing and communications
- Sport Governance
While these are focus areas, we welcome a range of skills and experience that can contribute to the growth of surfing in New Zealand. Alignment with the sport’s purpose is required and an affinity with surfing is desirable.
Personal traits of our successful board members will include:
- Ability to constructively contribute to boardroom conversations
- Time and genuine desire to contribute
- Self-awareness
- Culturally responsive
The role is open to individuals living throughout Aotearoa.
Time commitment and term
As a guide, we expect an average time commitment of four hours each month. Board meetings are typically held ten times per year online and one to two times in person (Auckland/Christchurch). Some subcommittee work is also required.
Roles will start in November 2022 at the annual general meeting (Saturday 19th November).
Remuneration
The roles are unpaid. Travel and expenses for in-person board meetings will be reimbursed.
Interviews with shortlisted candidates will be held online between 12-16 September.
