How did you start surfing: Learnt in the whitewash and kept practicing everyday
Surfing competitively Since: Did a few comps in my first five years, but did not do any national level events till 2000 onwards, where I have been doing lots of local and national ones since.
Competition strategy: Try not to over complicate things and keep to the basic formulas – catch two good waves/build on scores. Over the years have tried hard to get away from surfing too safe, and try to surf like I’m free surfing.
New Zealand teams: Declined invitations to do this back in the 2000’s in favour of spending my savings on long Indonesian surf holidays.
Career highlight: 2021 South Island Champs winner. 6x National title holder half in over 30s and half in over 35s. Won many of the main local contest’s multiple times.
