Ben Kennings has played a key role in the growth and development of Surfing New Zealand since joining the organisation in 2003. With a background in event management and communications, Ben has been instrumental in elevating the profile of surfing in Aotearoa, supporting both grassroots initiatives and elite athlete pathways.

A passionate surfer from the age of five, Ben continues to compete and stay connected to the sport he loves. His firsthand experience as an athlete has shaped his dedication to creating better opportunities for New Zealand’s surfing community.

Before taking on his full-time role, Ben served as the Athletes’ Representative on the Surfing New Zealand Board from 2000 to 2003. He holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Waikato and has professional experience in the resource management and environmental planning sectors.

Ben’s leadership is driven by a vision to grow surfing in New Zealand and ensure its long-term sustainability—on the waves and beyond.

Lee Ryan brings a wealth of international experience and knowledge to Surfing New Zealand, having immigrated from the U.K. in 2006 after working with the British Surfing Association as an Instructor Trainer and Assessor.

A former professional surfer, Lee competed full-time on the ASP (now WSL) World Longboard Tour from 1995 to 2006, earning nine British National Titles across shortboard and longboard disciplines. His competitive background gives him deep insight into athlete development and high-performance coaching.

Lee is a highly respected judge with over 30 years of experience in the sport. He currently serves as Head Judge for the NZ Longboard Tour and holds accreditations as both a WSL and ISA judge. He delivers the International Surfing Association’s (ISA) Judging and Coaching Programs and oversees the SNZ Approved Surf Schools network.

Lee also plays a pivotal role in the development of emerging talent as the National Convener for New Zealand representative teams. He manages Surfing New Zealand’s award-winning Wave Warriors Junior Surfing Programme, designed to nurture young surfers across the country.

Lee holds a Certificate in Sport Coaching from the Waikato Institute of Sport and is dedicated to fostering excellence at every level of surfing in Aotearoa.
