COOLANGATTA, Queensland/Australia (Wednesday, March 4, 2015) The opening stop on the Samsung Galaxy World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour, the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by BOQ, has been called OFF for the day with only small surf on offer at Snapper Rocks. Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning to assess conditions and make the next call.

“It was a fantastic day yesterday and it was great to see the women out there, they were ripping,” Kieren Perrow, WSL Commissioner, said. “The swell has dropped a lot since then and lost its consistency and size. We won’t be on today, we’ll go on hold and be back tomorrow morning to have another look at conditions.”

Three-time World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) will face wildcard Dane Reynolds (USA) in the opening heat of Round 2 when competition resumes, while 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) will take on trials winner Jack Freestone (AUS) in Heat 2, both battling for a place in Round 3.

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) will face Silvana Lima (BRA) and Dimity Stoyle (AUS) in Round 3 in a rematch of the Round 1 bout where the reigning six-time WSL Champion suffered defeat at the hands of an in-form Lima.

Surfline, official forecaster for the World Surf League, are calling for:

Small surf continues for the next couple of days. Watching for better southerly swell to build in Friday into Saturday. At this time, only small-scale South and East swells line up for the 8th-11th, but some models indicate a possibility toward the last couple days of the waiting period.

The Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast will be webcast LIVE at WorldSurfLeague.com.

The world’s best surfing will also be broadcast LIVE on Fox Sports in Australia, MCS Extreme in France, EDGE Sports in China, South Korea Malaysia and other territories and the WSL’s new partner in Brazil, Globo TV.
